Rural Rituals and Community at Radically Rural

The Rural Assembly was honored to attend and present at this year’s Radically Rural summit in Keene, New Hampshire. The conference, presented by the Hannah Grimes Center, brought together nearly 500 attendees from across the United States and Canada to explore the theme of rural resonance. Keynotes and workshops focused on ways we resonate and strengthen one another not in isolation, but as a whole.

We connected with old friends in rural community work and met new ones. We have so enjoyed learning about rural places and initiatives across the country.

Also this year, our partners at the Daily Yonder were a Radically Rural event sponsor. DY reporter Julia Tilton spoke with attendees about how to build trust with sources in rural communities.

Thanks to the Center for coordinating such a beautiful event. The opening keynote and other select sessions are available to watch on Radically Rural’s session recap.

Rural Rituals

Rural Assembly Director of Partnerships and Programs Taneum Fotheringill, along with Ash Hanson, Chief Creative Officer of Department of Public Transformation, and writer/artist Mai’a Williams, presented a workshop on rural rituals. Workshop attendees explored how rural rituals form identity.

At Rural Assembly, we think of rituals as experiences that are repeatable, connective, tap into a higher-purpose, collective, embodied, interrupt the daily flow of life, and meaningful. Leaning into these characteristics can elevate our community practices and bring us closer together.

In the session, we heard about community rituals and committed to tending to existing and new rituals when we arrive back home from Radically Rural.

Here’s a look back in photos at the Rural Rituals workshop.

Thank you to Radically Rural for having us be part of this enriching time together.
