Rural Assembly Joins Coalition to Fight For Affordable, Equitable Internet

BroadbandTogetherThe Rural Assembly is joining with Consumer Reports and a broad coalition of partners to launch Let’s Broadband Together, a first-of-its-kind project to find out what people really pay — and what they are really getting — for their internet service. Consumer Reports is asking consumers to share their monthly internet bills so its researchers can analyze the cost, quality, and speeds that are being delivered to people in communities across the United States. Why Broadband Matters: One-pagers from Broadband Connects America

Thirty-nine percent of rural Americans lack high-speed broadband, making the digital divide one of the largest demographic gaps in the country. Bringing reliable, affordable broadband to all rural Americans is a dire 21st century need. It’s time to connect all Americans, regardless of geographical location. Rural Assembly is proud to participate on the steering committee of Broadband Connects America, a coalition working for increased broadband across rural America. The coalition has put together a series of one pagers outlining why broadband is essential for other issue priorities. Check them out and share below.

About the Rural Broadband Policy Group

The Rural Broadband Policy Group is a growing national coalition of rural broadband advocates. The RBPG has two goals:

1) To articulate broadband policies that create opportunities for rural communities to
participate fully in the nation’s democracy, economy, culture, and society, and

2) To spark and kindle national collaboration among rural advocates for fast, affordable, and reliable Internet

Organizations that are interested in more information about the Rural Broadband Policy Group may contact Marty Newell at the Center for Rural Strategies or sign up for our listserv. To learn more about the initiative, click the button below.

The 3G Shutdown: How it Impacts Rural Consumers

The 3G Shutdown: How it Impacts Rural Consumers

This year, all major mobile providers will shut down their 3G networks.

3G technology is around two decades old, and while it makes sense to repurpose technology and resources toward systems that serve us better, the downside is that cellphones, alarm systems and other devices that run on 3G will become obsolete overnight. And that could be a problem for rural consumers who still depend upon those systems and devices to stay connected to family, work, and emergency services.
